Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about Temar, BYOK, spaced repetition, billing, and data privacy.
What is Temar?
Temar is an AI-powered spaced repetition platform built for deep learning. You write your study material, and Temar generates thoughtful review questions, evaluates your answers with AI, and schedules your reviews at the optimal time using the FSRS algorithm. It is designed for learners who want to truly understand and retain what they study — not just memorize flashcards.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. The Free plan gives you unlimited topics, notes, and chunks. To use AI features (question generation and answer analysis) on the Free plan, you need to bring your own API key (BYOK). This lets you access all AI features at no cost through Temar — you only pay whatever your AI provider charges directly. See the Billing & Plans page for full plan details.
What is BYOK?
BYOK stands for Bring Your Own Key. Instead of using Pass credits to pay for AI operations through Temar, you connect your personal API key from a supported provider (Google AI Studio, Anthropic, or DeepSeek). All AI requests are routed through your key, so Temar charges you nothing for AI usage. Your key is encrypted with AES-256-GCM and is only decrypted when making API calls on your behalf.
What AI models does Temar support?
Temar supports models from three providers:
- Google Gemini — fast and cost-effective, great for most study material.
- Anthropic Claude — excellent at nuanced reasoning and detailed grading rubrics.
- DeepSeek — a strong economy option with competitive performance.
You can configure which provider and model to use for each operation type (question generation and answer analysis) in Settings → AI & Data. Available models depend on your plan tier and whether you are using BYOK.
How does spaced repetition work?
Spaced repetition is a study technique where you review material at increasing intervals over time. Instead of cramming everything at once, you revisit each item right before you would forget it. Temar uses the FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) algorithm, which tracks your memory strength for each item and calculates the optimal next review date based on your past performance. The result: you study less but remember more.
For a deeper explanation of how reviews work in Temar, see the Reviews & Spaced Repetition guide.
What question types are available?
Temar supports three question formats:
- Open-ended — write a free-form answer that is evaluated by AI against a detailed rubric. Best for deep conceptual understanding.
- Multiple choice (MCQ) — select the correct answer from several options. Graded instantly on the client without an AI call, so they cost no Pass credits.
- LeetCode-style — write code to solve a problem derived from your study material. Great for programming and algorithm courses.
You choose the question type when you track a chunk. Learn more on the Question Generation page.
Can I import from Notion?
Yes. Temar has a Notion integration that lets you import pages via OAuth. Connect your Notion workspace in Settings → Integrations, select the pages you want to import, and Temar will convert them into Topics, Notes, and Chunks automatically.
What happens if I run out of Pass credits?
If your Pass balance reaches zero, AI operations (question generation and answer analysis) will pause until you have credits again. You have two options:
- Enable BYOK — connect your own API key in Settings → AI & Data and all AI features resume immediately at no Pass cost.
- Purchase a top-up pack — buy 50 Passes for $2.50 or 100 Passes for $5.00 from Settings → Billing. Top-up credits never expire for 12 months.
Your existing content, review history, and scheduling data are never affected — only new AI operations require credits.
Never get stuck
Is my data private?
Yes. Your study material, review history, and personal data are private and never shared with other users or used to train AI models. API keys are encrypted with AES-256-GCM and stored securely. For full details, read our Privacy Policy.
Can I sync reviews to my calendar?
Yes. Temar integrates with Google Calendar to show your upcoming review sessions alongside your other commitments. Connect your Google account in Settings → Integrations and Temar will create events in a dedicated calendar whenever you have reviews due.
Can I cancel my subscription?
Yes, you can cancel at any time from Settings → Billing. Your paid plan remains active until the end of the current billing period, then you revert to the Free plan. Your topics, notes, chunks, and review history are never deleted. For refund requests, see our refund policy.
